Prevention of Torture and Ill-Treatment: International and European Standards and Best Practices
On April 20, 2023, the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights  (Ombudsman) Feruza Eshmatova took part in an international conference organized in Almaty, the Republic of Kazakhstan. The international event on the topic "Prevention of torture and ill-treatment: international and European standards and best practices" was organized in cooperation with the European Union together with the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Institute of the Ombudsman of Kazakhstan.

The international event was attended by the Ombudsmen of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Austria, Moldova, Tajikistan, Poland, the Kyrgyz Republic, National Human Rights Centers, representatives of the court, prosecutor's office and civil structures, as well as experts from a number of authoritative international organizations.

The main purpose of organizing the conference was to study the activities of the National Preventive Mechanisms introduced in the states to identify and prevent cases of violence and torture, to analyze the role of various state bodies, including prosecution or investigative bodies, judges and national institutions for the protection of rights, in solving this problem.

The event noted that the prohibition of violence and torture is the basis of international human rights documents and national legislation of all countries of the world. In particular, the constitutions of the countries of Central Asia strictly prohibit torture and ill-treatment, violence under any circumstances and without exception.

Speaking at an international conference, Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Feruza Eshmatova spoke about her experience in ensuring human rights in our country. She also spoke about the work carried out within the framework of the National Preventive Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture, established under the Ombudsman in 2019.

The international conference heard the best practices of many countries in the prevention of cases of torture and an exchange of views on international standards. The event, held in the spirit of free communication, was full of discussions.
