Strong earthquakes shook some areas of the central part of Italy on August 24th, 2016. The authorities have reported more than 160 people dead, hundreds injured and missing. Dozens of buildings, roads and bridges were destroyed, which hinders the access to the rescuers in disaster areas. The army units were mobilized for participation in salvage operations.
Seismologists have reported a number of underground shocks of the magnitude up to 6.0 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake were towns of Amatrice and Accumoli in the province of Rieti. The city center of Amatrice was completely destroyed, about 2.5 thousand people have lost their houses in Accumoli, the towns have no electricity, the water supply was disrupted.
Firefighters and medical teams were sent to assist to the affected area. Homeless people were accommodated in the sports halls and schools. In some area campgrounds were set up.
