Were prisoners given undrinkable water in the Detention Facility in Khorezm? The Regional Representative of the Ombudsman clarified the situation
The Regional Representative of the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman) in the Khorezm region Odilbek Ollayorov received an appeal from the prisoners of the Detention Facility No. 11 of the city of Urgench. The appeal states that the drinking water provided to the detainees is unsuitable for human consumption.

On May 12, 2022, the Regional Representative immediately went to the scene of the incident, together with the responsible officer of the regional department of the service for sanitary and epidemiological welfare and public health, to study the appeal on the spot.

It was revealed that the use of electricity in the cells of the facility No. 11 is prohibited from 22:00 to 6:00 in the morning. During this time the prisoners held in the institution had to drink unboiled water when they needed it.

During the study, an employee of the regional department of the service for sanitary and epidemiological welfare and public health checked the quality of water and recommended drinking boiled water only.

It was also found that each cell has equipment for boiling water, and the prisoners were told that they should stock up on the necessary amount of boiled water before 10 pm.

During the monitoring, the opinions of the detainees about the conditions created for them were also studied.
